About Us

Akagera Aviation came about in 2004 with the arrival of our three Robinson R44 helicopters flown all the way from South Africa. The company is privately owned by Rwandan entrepreneurs who identified the need for general aviation services in Rwanda. Through careful selection of experienced key personnel, the company is realizing its vision of building local capacity throughout the region.

The company is based at Kigali International Airport, the gateway to Rwanda. We have offices in the main terminal building and our operations take place from our hangar on the airside of the airport.

The company is licensed by the Rwandan Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA). Since Rwanda is a signatory state to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) you can rest assured that all our services are on par with international best practices. We are the first Rwandan company to be licensed in all three spheres of aviation being licensed as an: Air Service Operator (ASO), Aviation Training Organisation (ATO) and an Aviation Maintenance Organisation (AMO).

Our Chief Pilot and Instructor, David Baard, who has 22 years of experience in aviation has a long association with Rwanda dating back to 1997 when he first trained Rwandan Air Force pilots in South Africa.  It is a point of pride for us that aside from David, all of our pilots are ex military pilots having served with the Rwandan Air Force and have been trained by David.

Our Chief Engineer, Carey Ouellette, from Canada brings 26 years of aviation experience to the company. Carey has undergone extensive training through the Robinson Helicopter Company, the manufacturer of our helicopters.

In 2008 after meeting strict qualification requirements Akagera Aviation was appointed as a Robinson Helicopter Dealership and Service Centre, the first in the East African region. We are therefore positioned to offer you turnkey solutions to your every helicopter need.
